Why we swim - Jasmine's Story
As a keen swimmer, Jasmine Rule took the plunge and entered the Toowoomba MS Swimathon back in 2012 when we first launched, and has dived in every year since!
Even when she was 8-9 months pregnant, Jasmine still travelled the 4–5-hour journey she undertakes every year to come along and take part. A truly amazing level of commitment and we at MS Queensland are so grateful!
Taking part in honour of her mum, who sadly passed away from MS at the young age of 24, Jasmine remembers that her mum was strong as she could be, but yet you could tell how much pain she was in at the time. “Growing up without Mum was extremely hard. To learn things about her and her illness over the years hasn’t been easy.”
Jasmine’s two children, Leo (age 6) and Melissa (age 3) have been cheering on their mum at the pool since they were born and love being part of the MS Swimathon community. They know that when they jump in and make a splash, they are swimming for their nanny.
Jasmine and her family raise whatever they can to support MS Queensland and over the years have raised over $5,000. These funds help to provide support and information, as well as vital services to ensure people living with MS don’t feel alone on their journey.
It is poignant that this year, the Toowoomba MS Swimathon falls on her mum’s birthday and of course Jasmine will be diving in once again! “To swim this year on Mum’s birthday just makes this day a little extra special for the 3 of us.”
