Why we swim - Rebecca's Story
Rebecca certainly likes being active and in her spare time, enjoys swimming, cycling and the challenge of an Ironman Triathlon. She’s a true survivor, having had thyroid cancer in 2019 and 2020 and knows, as the as the Ironman Triathlon tagline goes, that ‘anything is possible!’
When Rebecca’s colleague Tara Clarke, who lives with MS, told her about MS Queensland and the MS Swimathon events 2 years ago, Rebecca was ready for another challenge. She signed up and was there on the starting blocks, ready to dive in!
“My first year was a team swimmer for the MS squad and last year I gathered a team of friends and family together to support me for this wonderful cause. I even roped in my husband Kieran and children Jacob, Joshua and Chloe, who all just loved the day too!”
Rebecca tells us, “I choose to be involved, so that people living with MS can benefit from the much-needed funds raised by these MS Swimathon events. The sense of community at the Redcliffe MyHealth MS Swimathon is simply fantastic, and you can’t help wanting to come back year on year.”
Over the 2 years she has taken part, Rebecca has raised $6,000 and is already preparing for this year’s event! Every year her fundraising target is to beat her previous year’s total, and we are so grateful for her incredible support! Watch this space, as who knows what 2023 will bring for Rebecca’s fundraising...
Do you need some fundraising tips? Rebecca has shared her top 3 with us, which will help you to maximise your fundraising, take a look below:
- Always send a personal email to thank each person who has donated regardless of the amount
- Post photos of yourself during your training for the event so people on your social media can see your commitment to the cause
- Continue to inspire people by doing things for others and share the information about others who are living with MS and their stories, as it opens people's eyes and ears when they know more about what MS Queensland does for them. This info is provided when you sign up so I just share it as much as I can!
